Drawn And Quartered: Feeding hell's furnace

03/10/12  ||  Smalley

The bad thing about having all your regular, desired music downloads going into the same folder on your comp as your (generally) undesired, GD stub-records is that sometimes, you aren’t sure if you downloaded a record yourself just for enjoyment/curiosity/staying current with big releases, or if it’s a sent-in stub you claimed that you’re kinda obligated by site contract or something to take care of stubbing. A few quick skims thru Drawn And Quartered’s “Feeding hell’s furnace” actually left a good impression, to the point where I wondered if this had been a stub at all or not, and I actually thought about writing a full review just for fun for this, but a more in-depth exploration changed my mind.

End of pointless filler paragraph, but sometimes you just need to switch things up in some way, ya know? Anyway, since I’m not sure of this one’s status, I’ll stub it just to be safe, and I have to say, it’s just okay; death metal with a doomy/sludgy production, and with some usage of those slower tempos as well, and some definite Morbid Angel influence (big surprise), but without their hooks. This is pretty competently executed in every aspect, with a decently punchy production and solid performances, but not really memorably executed, and with songwriting that just doesn’t grab. I’m not telling D&Q to give up yet, just try to focus on making your hooks catchier, and you guys might become a band worth following, some day.

6/10: Stub or just some random album, you’re ok. Not bad, at least!
